If you find yourself a little lost reading Westward, it helps to remember that you’re not alone. Its characters are just as confused as you. On the upside: Algae cakes!

DAN: You’re the youngest cadet, Laz, but you’re not the only cadet. We all had to leave our home and teachers to be here.
LAZARUS: What home? Mars? Earth? Which earth?
DAN: The Scientific Society isn’t a place. As long as we help each other, we’re in it together. The First Scientist says–
LAZARUS: The First Scientist is a billion miles away! So is the Scientific Society. We’re all on our own now.
MINNE: All the more reason to look after each other, then. I saved you boys some cakes.

And again the spy arrives bearing food. Classic trust-building.

    • Matt [in Middletown]

Great, now i hear TF2’s heavy yelling about the spy.

  • TheGorram Batguy

    Hooray! Westward returns yet again!

  • Homunclus

“Why are the cakes shaped like cubes?”

    “Cause we are in SPACE!!!!!”

Lazarus needs to get his scale in order. He says “The First Scientist is a billion miles away”, as though that’s a long way. That’s well inside the solar system, not even as far as Uranus.

Voyager 1 and 2 are 13 billion and 10.5 billion miles from Earth, respectively. 1 is finally just outside our solar system, 2 is still in the heliopause.

    • Homunclus

Yeah…figure of speech. I didn’t even give it a second thought.

    • Lazarus is ten years old, so I wouldn’t expect him to be too literal. For me, “a billion miles” sounds like a long way, but “740 light-years” doesn’t quite process into anything meaningful.
