Depending on how you look at it, everything is random on Westward. Or nothing is. -e

Transcript:

FRANCIS: We’ve followed one of the Escherspace tunnels. Selected more or less at random, I assume. The next step is to determine where it’s taken us.
AMILA: Strange, isn’t it? Two years ago, we thought we were trailblazing. Now we’re following someone else’s footprints, navigating with charts mapped in another epoch.
DISEMBODIED VOICE: Lazarus… Lazarus…! Lazarus.
DAN: Lazarus! Hey, Laz, wake up, cadet!

I love it when Carter assumes. It’s a flag for “NOT”.

“Two years ago we thought we were trailblazing”

Did they? How the hell did they thought they were navigating? Did they just think Phobos picked stars at random?

    • Maybe that was one of many questions that Carter chose not to ask in the beginning. He seemed content to look at it merely through the lens of human exploration. Now that lens has been shattered; but is the captain any more willing to face his ghosts?

Panel 5: hello there, disembodied Martian hand.

    • Folarx

How could I miss this!? Now, is this Phobos, or Daimos, or somebody with a very long rubber glove?

      • Matt [in Middletown]

Ben, with very scary movie magic!

  • bayareajohn

    Hoping all is ok.
I think no one wanted to ask because we don’t want to be pushy – we’re glad for what you offer us.
So don’t think that because nobody asked, that we don’t care… we care about you and we hope for more Westward. Both, ideally. But you come first.

    • Thank you, John. My early mornings have been otherwise occupied for the last couple weeks, but I expect to return to Westward soon.

        4 months… hope… fading… kirk out..

        • Homunclus

I guess we have to wait and see. On the whole I get the feeling that sooner or later we will see a conclusion to Westward, but it may take many years.

          • Thanks for your continued support, pioneers. Be sure to sign up for the Pony Express newsletter; if and when I’m able to resume updates, you’ll be notified automatically via email.

You know, we’d really be happy with one strip a week. Or less!

Dresden Codak keeps an audience with an irregular but roughly monthly installment.
            Think about it.

          • Hi, John! I can’t speak for the quality or value of Westward as compared to Dresden’s work, but I do think that anyone who commits to reading such a complex story deserves for me to have a plan for timely, quality production. Right now, I don’t have a realistic plan to make time for it. There’s always hope that this can change, but grownup life means making grownup choices.

Understood. I hope you understand that we long for more Westward out of appreciation, not because we want to ruin your life.

          • Perish the thought! It’s good to know that Westward has made a positive impact on a few people. I appreciate you too much to risk more false starts or poor quality.

          • Folarx

It looks like Westward has got a handful of hardcore fans, too. That’s more than most have.

          • Homunclus

Well said. Any life ruin that might come out of it is just an added bonus 😋

        • Folarx

Be careful with what appears to be a log book device. Sometimes are you are unintentionally telling your diary to a Gorn Captain.

          • Folarx

Not saying I am a Gorn.
But I am not saying I am not, either.

            (Muu-Hahaha)

  • Matt [in Middletown]

Ominous that none of the cardboard Carters made an appearance.
There must be a nefarious meeting in the storage room.
If only we knew what they were up to!

HI I have just discovered Westward and very sad that it is suspended. I wanted anyhow to check out Ravenlaw or to make a pledge to support your work, which I think is excellent, but I tried on Patreon and it fails every time. When I click on “Become a patron” the site sends me back to my home page. Please let me know if there is some way to improve on this.

    • Hi, Blissex! Thank you for your interest and compliments. For most of Westward’s production, I was working as a freelancer and income from donations was capable of helping me free up time to spend on the comic. This is no longer the case. At present, I have not found a way to prioritize continued production, but I always appreciate hearing from readers who have enjoyed the work so far.
