Anka
Agent for the
Scientific Society.
Recognizable by a mark over her upper lip, Anka plays a mysterious and complex role in the life of
Lamont Townsend. While Lamont doesn't seem to remember her name, she appears in the memories of his internment in a communist prison in three separate but weirdly overlapping roles: As the communist pilot who
captured him near Lhasa, as the "Comrade Supervisor" who
oversaw his torture, and as the prison
nurse who tended his wounds and offered him advice. Despite the obvious contradiction, Lamont does not appear to have seriously questioned her presence in his memories until the events of
Episode Two.
Spoilers:
In Episode Two, Lamont Townsend's memories begin to unravel themselves in surprising and disturbing ways between two Escherspace jumps. Having realized that three separate "characters" in his memory of the communist prison were portrayed by the same person, he later realizes a deeper connection: That Anka is a member of the Scientific Society and apparently a childhood friend. This makes the subsequent circumstances all the more disturbing when Lamont, believing her to be a communist, kills her to make good his escape from the communist prison.
In Episode Three, we learn that Lamont was unsuccessful in his grim attempt, as Anka reappears in the Scientific Society to watch as Arizona's world comes to an end. True to her previous appearances, Anka is compliant but not unmoved.
