There's nothing worse than a bad doctor.

Welcome back, Pioneers! I hope you had a relaxing weekend, because things are looking mighty hairy for our friends on Westward. This week, they'll be trying everything possible to stop themselves from becoming a major astronomical event at the hands(?) of the alien entity. Speaking of which, what is this Master Switch, you ask? Well, come back tomorrow as we learn more about Wesley's daring plan!

Oh, and don't forget to keep on trailblazing: If you like this strip, pass it on using the "Tweet," "Share," or "Like" buttons! -e

It would be nice if there would be a master switch in Fukushima Daiichi...

And I am sorry but melted down reactor cores don't blow up like nukes, the worst think that can happen is explosion caused by heated gases, and spill of radioactive material. Generally it would be unwise and unnecessary to use "nuke grade" material for power reactor fuel.
Looks like it's "ultimate sacrifice time" for Wes.
You're certainly right, Luke. This plot point rests on the idea that Westward's reactors function differently from the ones we're familiar with. Their earth is powered almost exclusively using nuclear power plants more advanced than ours (possibly utilizing fusion rather than fission) and Westward's engine is the most powerful single reactor yet built.
Fusion would just make it worse! And by "worse" I mean better! :P If something goes wrong in a fusion reactor it simply shuts down, because there aren't any chain reactions in fusion that could sustain themselves, and any breach of containment would also make the reaction itself impossible. I prefer the previous explanation, myself -- Stan disabled the safeties on their nuclear toaster. :P
This is reminding me of the end of Fallout 3
Something hasn't gone wrong, exactly, Meh.Aloe; "Stan" has disabled all the safety mechanisms and is pushing the reaction beyond capacity.
Beyond capacity? Dammit, Stan, one slot means one piece of toast, no more!
Mmm! Nuclear toast! ... Of course, they'll all be toast if Spratt the Bratt fails!
It's interesting to me that he didn't just kill them both. Does this mean the aliens don't understand unconsciousness, or for some reason view killing everyone all together in an explosion as different from killing these two personally first? If I was a villain, I'd just kill people dead instead of leaving them around the figure out ways to stop me. :-D
However the alien ship will absorb all the excess energy. They might survive yet.
